The shattered shadows of dragonflies
flutter down on me, around me,
as sunny amber halos momentarily suspend
dust motes from today and yesterday
and tomorrow.
All here. Now –
My eighteen-year-old on the canal outside Greeley. Nostalgia.
Cherry pie with my grandmother in her Indiana kitchen. Love.
My twenty-eight-year-old at Cache La Poudre River, Laporte. Promises.
Books with my other grandmother. Wisdom.
My thirty-five-year-old on Rio Grande water ranchland, San Luis Valley. Dreams.
My mentor and her laughter, gone some twelve years now.
My forty-year-old with La Plata River water. Second chances.
My son in all his ages.
My forty-five-year-old and Pitkin Mesa water running through my veins. Redemption.
All this behind me.f
And now? Yakima Valley River water feeding hops (beer hops for beer-making)
into the clear tangle of my future self, knowing new waters.
Waters somewhere along new lines.
All kissing together at once,
kissing the tears on my cheeks
from the empty fullness of life
in the time machine vortex of an amber sun
with dragonflies shattering flight and shadows
everywhere I look.
